I love playing the Sims games on PC, but it's got me thinking. When they speak, what language is it and do the words actually mean anything, or is it just gibberish?
The language of The Sims is called Simlish and was initially inspired by experimenting with the Navajo language spoken by the native code talkers of World War II. However, the designers thought that a real language would make it sound too repetitive and would also be too costly to hire translators for world languages.
It developed into "gibberish" based on fractured versions of Ukrainian, French, Latin, Finnish, English and Tagalog. It's not meant to be understood as the designers wanted words left open to the interpretation and imagination of the player.

I think it's not such a bad thing really, I totally agree that it should be left to the players imagination!
I believe it was Stephen keratin (one of the voice actors that originally suggested this but don't quote me on it as I am not 100% sure!
To interpret and imagine by the player sounds interesting for those who loves multilingual language. But for those who wants to understand the game clearly, English is still the best.
I find that there are certain words that sound very similar to actual words but maybe that is my mind making them that way. I love Simlish, and I kinda wish I could learn it like people learn, spanish, french or klingon lol
I play the sims often and also wondered what the heck that language was.
Gibberish fractured versions of other languages is cool too though. And it makes since, leaving us some imagination to what they are saying is always a plus... Thanks for the FAQ though, this is something I always wondered about!
What is Sims? I know it's a game but what does it involve?
